AFTER CARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR BRACES

We’ve prepared instructions for the after care having braces placed. If you are ever unsure of what to do, please call our office at 780-849-2233.

You have just had your brackets (braces) placed, here are a few things you should know:

Care to Ensure Success

By actively taking part in your treatment, you, your orthodontist and the office staff will develop a mutual confidence. Together you’ll advance step by step toward your ultimate goal… a beautiful smile. The biggest enemy of your teeth is plaque and the most effective means of removing plaque from your teeth is regular brushing and flossing.

Brushing Techniques

  • Hold the brush at an angle and press firmly against the teeth flexing the bristles.

  • Move brush in small circles, cleaning the surface.

  • Brush above and below the archwire

  • Brush back side and chewing surfaces of all teeth

Flossing Techniques

  • Slide the floss gently between the teeth

  • Avoid snapping the floss through a tight space

  • Rub the floss up and down the sides of each tooth

  • Do not use a shoe-shine or see-saw motion

Foods To Avoid

Braces are delicate and easily damaged, so what to eat becomes especially important in caring for your appliances.

Here Are Some Foods Which Should Be Avoided:

  • STICKY FOODS: Caramels, Taffy and chewing gum

  • HARD FOODS: Hard Candy, Raw Carrots, Popcorn, Pizza crusts, ice, etc…

If You Have Discomfort

Your braces may cause some discomfort during the first few days of treatment and after some sequential adjustments. There are several things you can do to minimize this problem.

  • Eat soft foods for the first few days

  • Use a warm saltwater rinse, as needed

  • Take aspirin or a non-aspirin substitute as needed

  • Put wax over problem areas
