You have just had a temporary crown placed, here are a few things you should know:
Care to Ensure Success
The temporary crown protects the tooth and restores appearance to the tooth until the permanent crown can be placed. It is held in place by the use of a temporary dental cement.
If the temporary crown comes off, cement it with a paste mixture of flour and water, or a denture adhesive paste. To cement the temporary crown, dry the tooth, place a small amount of adhesive paste in the crown, align the crown on the tooth, and bite down until the teeth fit together. Remove any excess cement with a toothpick when it has set completely. Then call the office at your first available opportunity to set up an appointment for cementation of the provisional crown.
DO NOT LEAVE THE PROVISIONAL CROWN OFF FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME – this will allow the tooth to shift and may prevent the permanent crown from fitting properly.
It is common to experience sensitivity to hot and cold and touch, especially around the edge of the temporary crown. Some soreness to pressure or biting may be evident for a period of days. If your temporary tooth feels too high please call the office to schedule a small adjustment. The sensitivity and mild discomfort that is common after crown preparation treatment is usually easily controlled by the use of Advil.
The gum in the area of the crown preparation may be tender following treatment. Use Warm salt water rinses to aid in healing.
Avoid chewing hard or sticky foods in the area of the temporary crown. Failure to follow these guidelines may cause fracture, dislodgement, or loss of the temporary crown.
You will be given a proxy brush to minimize the inflammation around the tooth. This will make the cementation appointment much more successful. Please dip the proxy brush in the peroxide and stimulate the gums on either side of the temporary tooth. Please brush and floss everywhere else as you would normally.
